But Brooklyn-born banker Clark Krimer wasn’t busted when cops raided the posh, Moroccan-style harem run by accused pimp Jason Itzler. Two sources familiar with the place said Krimer has agreed to testify against his flamboyant ex-boss.

“He got away like a ghost,” the jailed Itzler said of Krimer, his 27-year-old protégé at the sex joint called NY Confidential, in an interview at Rikers Island.

“He wasn’t there when the cops came, and nobody told on him.”

Itzler accuses Krimer, a well-dressed, muscle-bound presence at the cathouse, of bringing drugs there and swiping as much as half a million dollars.

“Clark was in charge of the money and just stashed it somewhere,” said a former escort who asked not to be identified. “He was a nice guy in the beginning. Then he turned into a really big a——.”

Said Itzler: “He did all the finances, dropped off cash at the bank, scheduled the girls. He even slept over at the place every night. He totally ran NY Confidential for the last six months.”

Itzler’s lawyer, Paul Bergrin, said he’s preparing a suit to get back the allegedly pilfered proceeds.

“Jason plans to take legal action against Clark for embezzlement in excess of $500,000,” Bergrin said.

Krimer could not be reached for comment.

But he has hired criminal-defense lawyer D. Andrew Marshall, who said, “I can neither corroborate or deny anything.”

Krimer got drawn into the business last summer after Itzler went to a branch of Independence Community Bank a block from the plush brothel on Worth Street to ask about setting up credit-card accounts for “my legal escort agency,” Itzler said.

A bank officer introduced him to Krimer, who handled merchant services at another branch.

Krimer was soon leading a double life, working at Independence by day and overseeing up to 100 leggy escorts by night, Itzler and others said.

Ron Sperling, a TV producer who taped a reality show inside NY Confidential, said Krimer told him he was cooperating with prosecutors.

Shirley Irene Wright pleaded guilty to two counts of causing a substantial annoyance, after placing ads for the 72- and 56-year-old women without their knowledge.

The ads contained the phrases “Devil after Midnight” and “Erotic Fantasies”.

One victim received 63 inquiries and was forced to unplug her telephone.

The court heard 52-year-old Wright placed the ads as retribution against her former work colleagues after her relationship with the pair soured.

Wright was ordered to conduct 160 hours community work.

“We are still illegal,” instructor Kimberlee Cline said before her 20-minute demonstration. “If we want to be treated as business professionals, we need to act ethically within the industry.”

By light of day, the women and men of the night swapped tips, argued over personal grooming choices and heard from others considered experts in their field. Many of the attendees said they were motivated as much by the networking opportunity and doing what they could to normalize the world’s oldest profession as furthering their education. During Cline’s workshop, for example, some in the audience skimmed magazines and chatted despite the carnal knowledge unfolding in front of them.

Participants who stuck it out for the whole day received diplomas certifying them as G.S.W’s – graduates in sex work.

Several students went to lengths to explain that they see themselves as inheritors of a proud tradition – specialists with a choice instead of exploited victims. Sporting nary a stiletto heel among them, their expressed reasons for turning to sex work – an umbrella term that encompasses everything from exotic dancing and acting in pornographic films to turning tricks – were as varied as their hair colors and body types.

“My own personal experience has been negative and positive, as with any job,” said Kymberly Cutter, 36, a mother of two from Tucson who returned to prostitution two years ago to boost her income and regards it as part of a journey in “personal self-discovery.” Her children, ages 7 and 9, know what she does for a living, she said.

The more shadowy aspects of the profession were covered in the curriculum. Lawyer Erin Crane explained that accepting money for a specific sex act could land someone in jail, but she repeated several times she couldn’t advise anyone on how to break the law.

Students practiced using assertive screaming for self-defense and they were told how to assess dangerous situations, and how to break free from an assailant’s grasp.

Erin O’Bryn, 36, who has appeared on adult television networks, worked in massage parlors, owned an escort referral service and last year ran for Congress in Hawaii, said wearing a power suit and good heels dissuades clients from thinking they can take advantage of her.

“Sex work is work. Prostitution is work,” Leigh said. “The most important thing is that we are diverse. Some are on the streets and in a very desperate situation. Others are in a working-class situation and maybe bored in their jobs. And others see sex work as their calling.”

Oxford student Nick Dekker, 22, who set up the website, said they were offering a great service for busy people.

‘Bright’ people

He said he had been inspired by friends’ experiences.

“I came up with the idea a few months ago. I was thinking of a few friends, who are charming and bright people who took good firsts, who had taken a year out and weren’t doing very much, and I thought that this was a good opportunity for them to do something with themselves.

“On the first day, 20 people signed up.”

The service will be up and running by mid-June - after Mr Dekker, a fourth-year classicist, completes his finals.

Charm test

Each would-be escort will be interviewed to test their “sparkiness” and their details, including a picture, will be posted on the site. They will pay £45 a year membership, while clients will pay £99.

A date will cost anywhere between £20 and £175, said Mr Dekker, and will be arranged between escort and client. The client will pay for restaurant bills, theatre tickets and any other expenses.

As for the universities themselves, he has not been in contact.

“I really hope that they are going to be supportive. We are not bringing either university into disrepute,” he said.

“We are providing a service for students and highlighting an important issue - student debt.”

Norway’s Supreme Court supported decisions refusing Conoco Phillips the right to fire two workers who surfed the Internet for pornographic images on company time.

The two workers on the Ekofisk field lost their jobs after being caught peeping at porn on the job in the summer of 2002. The pair took their case to court and won at both the municipal and appeals level, NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting) reports.

Conoco Phillips appealed the decisions to the Supreme Court in order to have a clarification of what employees can do on company time and what employers can do to enforce violations of company policy.

At least 10 American universities now have their own student-run erotic magazines, featuring sex advice, fiction and nude photo-spreads of ordinary students.

Dozens more host campus sponsored “sex events”, such as naked parties at Yale, something called the Condom Olympics, part of “sex week” at Tufts University, and National Outdoor Intercourse Day at Western Washington University, which teaches students about the legal repercussions of having sex outdoors.

If there is any political correctness about this movement, it is in the insistence on equal opportunities for gay and straight erotica.

The editors also claim they are exercising their First Amendment right to free speech, although that does not exclude typical undergraduate pomposity.

University of Chicago’s Vita Excolatur (Latin for “life enriched”), for example, combines photographs of half-naked gay couples in the library and an article on “How to be naked and look great doing it” with features on the Freudian analysis of the penis and “Psychoanalyse This: Sexual Overcoding and Discursive Limitation”.

H-Bomb, published at Harvard, features poetry and articles on psychoanalytic theory and French structuralism alongside photographs of students with no clothes on.

Newer entrants to the market acknowledge the pioneering role of Squirm: The Art of Campus Sex, started six years ago at Vassar - now co-educational, but once the leading all-female university in the US.

Boink: The College Guide to Carnal Knowledge, launched at Boston University in February, is the latest in the genre, and arguably the most explicit.

Alecia Oleyourryk, co-founder and editor in chief of Boink, is not afraid to call her magazine pornography or to pose semi-naked on the cover.

“Our magazine is porn,” she said. “It’s meant to arouse, it’s meant to excite.” It might also be meant to make money: the first issue sold 10,000 copies at $8 (£4.20) a time.

H-Bomb’s co-founders, Katharina Cieplak-von Baldegg and Camilla Hardy, distributed 4,000 free copies to Harvard students, and sold 3,000 more off-campus for $5 (£2.60) each.

Most of the universities’ administrations do not officially approve of student-run sex magazines, though some receive an element of funding in the name of free speech. Student reaction has been mixed. James Weight, 21, posed nude for Boink because he thought the magazine was “a fresh look at the way in which college students deal with sex in their environment”.

“I’ve received some playful chiding from friends but nothing serious,” he said.

At Harvard, Kathryn Renton said H-Bomb was “a symptom of a general blasé attitude about sex shielding covert titillation”, while Jason West was blunter. The magazine, he said, served “perverts just wanting to peek at naked college students”.

Christopher Anderson, Boink’s 38-year-old co-founder, photographed student models for his magazine and H-Bomb with the hope, he claims, of advancing a more “European” attitude towards sex in America.

“There is nothing shameful about nudity or sexuality,” he said. “Boston has these puritanical roots where anything related to sex becomes taboo.” He and Ms Oleyourryk had to find a printer in Canada for Boink, after six local companies turned it down. The US, Mr Anderson complained, “is either much more conservative or much more hypocritical”.

He was convicted in 2002 of harassing a former secretary, whom he accused of stealing, by disparaging her on his cable TV show, printing her home address in his magazine and threatening her over the telephone.
